THE VILLAGE GROUP enabling the authenticity economy

ENABLING the AUTHENTICITY ECONOMY

“The Internet Is Broken” proclaims the title of a recent MIT Technology Review cover story, while Stanford University's Clean Slate Initiative explores the idea of scrapping the existing Net and starting over.

The member enterprises and noncommercial organizations of the Quiet Enjoyment Alliance know that problems of malware, spam, invasion of personal privacy, phishing and predation can be solved with existing technology, applied according to the principles, methods and procedures of the Quiet Enjoyment Infrastructure.

HATSOPOLOUSOPHY

QEA member enterprises and noncommercial organizations are chartered and supported using methods that were implemented with remarkable success by George Hatsopolous, the founder of Thermo Electron Corporation. Each organization is, or will be, separately incorporated. Each has its own management. Each focuses on its own deliverable product or service that is built upon QEI for its own target audience or market.

For its part, The Village Group acts as provider of intellectual property and support, as facilitator of services provided by one member to another, and as provider of basic business services including marketing support, accounting services, business planning services, office facilities, hosting, purchasing, etc. The Village Group's goal is to relieve the QEA entrepreneur of as many basic business chores as possible, allowing her or him to focus on profitably building a base of satisfied customers.

QEA CULTURE

Effectively, all fulltime professionals in QEA member organizations share the same title, which is "Entrepreneur." We participate in that new phenomenon, a sector of the borderless world economy characterized by lean and agile organizations such as Craigslist,  Apache, and our own StartCom, whose great impact on the world is belied by their small size. Every one of the professionals in each member organization works toward goals that resemble those of an enterprise or noncommercial organization.

QEA ENTREPRENEURS

Wes Kussmaul

As the Chief Executive Officer of The Village Group Inc., Wes Kussmaul facilitates the deployment of the Quiet Enjoyment Infrastructure by members of the Quiet Enjoyment Alliance.

In 1981 Wes founded Delphi Internet Services Corporation and its Kussmaul Encyclopedia, the world's first computerized encyclopedia, an early example of hypertext. In 1989, Delphi became the first to bring the Internet to mass audiences.  Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation acquired Delphi in 1993.

While CEO of Delphi, Mr. Kussmaul launched a spin-off company, Global Villages, Inc., to provide magazine publishers with the business planning, design, engineering, hosting, management, and promotion services that allowed them to offer online services to their subscribers and advertisers under their own name.

During that time Wes realized that the unboundedness of the Web posed obstacles to the kind of secure communities and reliable identities needed by publishers and other relying parties. In order to focus on the authenticity issue, Wes sold the hosting portion of Global Villages Inc. to NTT Verio.

The continuing operation, now called The Village Group, turned its attention to enrollment technologies that will enable secure and reliable online spaces governed by the principles of professional licensing, building codes, and occupancy permits.

In 2002 The Village Group became a charter signatory to the International Telecommunication Union's World e-Trust Initiative and is now a Sector Member of the ITU. In 2007 the Secretary General of the ITU asked Wes to serve as a member of the High Level Experts Group in the ITU's Global Cybersecurity Agenda; and as a member of that group was asked to present his QEI vision of an authenticity-infused secure Internet to a meeting of the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS).

Wes is the author of several books about privacy and authenticity, including Quiet Enjoyment (2004), Own Your Privacy (2007), and The Future Needs You (2007). He is also an individual adherent of the International Union of Latin Notaries and has been appointed a Notary Ambassador by the National Notary Association.

Wes received a BS in Physics from the University of Central Missouri in 1971 while stationed in the US Air Force at Whiteman Air Force Base (SAC) and did graduate study in Business Administration at Boston University.
